This guided walking weekend combines one of the best woodland walks in the UK through the New Forest’s Bolderwood Arboretum, with a chance to blow away the cobwebs on the beautiful headland of Hengistbury Head.
Add a healthy heap of laughter, chatter and good food into the mix, and it all points to one of those weekends that will be filed away under the ‘Happy Memory’ category.
In a nutshell:
- Stroll through the Arboretum’s impressive ornamental conifers and ancient oak woodland.
- Watch up-close the Bolderwood fallow deer.
- Explore the scenic headland and nature reserve at Hengistbury Head.
- Lounge in front of open fires.
As you pitch up (from 5pm onwards) at the country house close to the village of Burley in the heart of the New Forest, you’ll be greeted by our Large Outdoors host.
Settling in will be easy as the comfortable lounge with open fire will immediately work its magic as you get to know your fellow walkers while supper is being cooked.
Having devoured a hearty breakfast, we don boots for today’s 10-mile walk through the Bolderwood Arboretum along flat trails, making it perfect for newbies to walking as well as seasoned-strollers.
Along the way we’ll have time to visit the observation platform overlooking the Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary and have front-seat viewing of the beautiful fallow deer.
On our return, you are also free to spend time in Burley village as the independent shops offer a fine chance for retail therapy or you can slake your thirst in one of the hostelries in the village!
After all that, it just leaves time for a bit more relaxation while our Large Outdoors host prepares your dinner using a plethora of local ingredients.
In contrast to the woodland walks of the previous day, we drive a short way to Hengistbury Head. This stunning headland is now largely a nature reserve and is an outstanding site for wildlife as well as offering beautiful beaches and views across the New Forest and the Isle of Wight.
During our 5-mile walk, there will be plenty of opportunities for ‘view stops’ and then we’ll head to the pub for lunch before heading home.

“I didn’t really know what to expect on my first ever walking holiday and wasn’t very prepared if truth be known – lesson to all read the essential kit list especially waterproofs! It was great fun and what a lovely group of supportive and encouraging people, especially Gareth who did a great job looking after us all. I must admit at times I found it a bit challenging but what a great sense of achievement when we reached the top of the mountains (hills) I will definitely do this again.ElizabethMember Since 2016
My first Large Outdoors and (Ulster & the Giant's Causeway Walking Weekend) Irish experience was absolutely fantastic. Everything was organised perfectly and Gareth is a joy to be around. I loved every minute and will definitely book myself onto another trip. #toldallmyfriendstheyhavetocomeVanessaMember Since 2018
Well, for a non-walker it was certainly challenging but my word was it exhilarating! The feeling of achievement after every day, was just fabulous. The group we went with were all strangers on day one, but firm friends by the end of the week. The comradery on some of the tougher walks, helped me to the top…..and wow what views. Anyone thinking of doing it - don’t worry….just go for it!ClaireMember Since 2016
