A weekend packed full of walks, activities and a great chance to catch up with old and new friends.
We enjoyed our 10th Birthday so much in Patterdale we have decided to go back for our 11th. With a large social space, open fires and enough space for us to party its the perfect spot. For the 11th year we will be returning to some of the old favourites such as the Alpaca walking but putting on totally new walks and routes.
Up at the head of Ullswater, ‘England’s most beautiful lake’, deep in the fells of the Lake District, is where we’ll be toasting 10 years of Large Outdoors running sociable guided walking trips all around the UK.
This weekend will be like any other. A cosy hostel, fantastic walks, a great bunch of fellow walkers, and the chance to explore a new area. If you’ve been on Large Outdoors trips before then don’t miss this opportunity to welcome in the second decade, but equally we love new members, so you’re more than welcome to make this your first trip!
In a nutshell:
- Explore the Lake District fells and lakeshores around Patterdale on two days of guided walks or enjoy other activities such as Alpaca Walking.
- Relax in our exclusive hostel, with a relatively large group of up to 85 keen fresh-air enthusiasts!
- Enjoy freshly prepared food, and get yourself in the spirit for a 11th birthday party to remember.
- Admire the nearby slopes of Helvellyn, gaze up at the red deer on Place Fell, and generally fall in love with the tranquillity of Lakeland.
Time to get the party started, on arrival the evening is yours to catch up with old friends or meet new friends, we will have dinner and few welcome drinks before discussing the plans for the rest of the weekend. Please don’t forget some activities will need to be booked in advance and can be done from this page at anytime.
As there are quite a few of us there’ll be a number of walk options, ranging from shorter rambles through the valley, exploring the beautiful shores of Ullswater, up to longer walks taking in the nearby mountain peaks.
Nearby options include the mountains of Helvellyn, Red Screes, Dollywagon Pike and High Street, the lower hills of Place Fell and Sheffield Pike, the lakeshore path of the Ullswater Way or of course a wander up one of the nearby valleys such as Grisdale or Deepdale. Whatever you choose it’ll be a great day out!
Events that need booking for Saturday are:
Helvellyn via Striding Edge (Saturday). £10pp
If you want a big adventure on Saturday then come along to Britain’s #1 walk! involving minor scrambling and some incredible views, it’ll be a day to remember on England’s 3rd highest mountain, right on our doorstep. There’s no extra cost for this walk, but the group size is limited to 8 so places need to be reserved.
Ullswater Steamer (Saturday). £8pp
Enjoy a cruise on Ullswater as part of today’s walk! We’ll be walking from the door of the hostel on a gentle walk to Glenridding, from where we get the famous steamer on a half-an-hour journey to Howtown. From there we can follow the lakeside trail back to the hostel. If there is enough interest for a bigger group we can also put on a higher level walk back to the hostel from Howtown, but there will definitely be an easy walk on offer. The steamer is a great way to admire the landscape from the serenity of the lake, and you can watch out for England’s only red deer herd on the slopes of Place Fell.
When all the walks have returned to the hostel there’ll be plenty of time to relax before the evening’s feast is served up. In a change from last year for the 11th we will be looking to have some music and maybe a mini disco..
Today we’ll head out on a few hours’ walk before heading somewhere you can get some lunch before the weekend comes to an end.
Walking options for today could include anything along the sides of Ullswater or indeed over the Kirkstone Pass towards Windermere. Popular choices could include Gowbarrow, with its excellent views of the lake, or perhaps Red Screes where we can see both Ullswater and Windermere! There will be several walk options, to suit all abilities.
Extra’s to book for Sunday
Alpaca Walking (Sunday). £29
Spend Sunday morning (start time 11am near Keswick) on the most relaxing walk imaginable, talking an Alpaca for a walk around the Lingholm Estate on the shores of Derwent Water. We’ll spend an hour and a half walking the alpacas, and meet the herd. Alpacas are known for their gentle nature and world-famous softness of their wool. This is a must for anyone who wants a special experience they won’t get in more stunning surroundings!
About the Area
The Lake District National Park
The Lake District was one of the first National Parks in the UK and has been celebrated as a destination for walking and relaxing for hundreds of years. As well as hundreds of hills, most complete with excellent paths, there are endless miles of lowland paths to discover, taking you to the lakes, woodlands and valleys celebrated in poetry and art and where ancient farming practises rub shoulders with more modern cafes and country pubs. Ullswater is England’s second largest lake and fills the valley beneath the famous slopes of Helvellyn, as well as other fantastic fells.

What our members have to say...
Well, for a non-walker it was certainly challenging but my word was it exhilarating! The feeling of achievement after every day, was just fabulous. The group we went with were all strangers on day one, but firm friends by the end of the week. The comradery on some of the tougher walks, helped me to the top…..and wow what views. Anyone thinking of doing it - don’t worry….just go for it!ClaireMember Since 2016
My first Large Outdoors and (Ulster & the Giant's Causeway Walking Weekend) Irish experience was absolutely fantastic. Everything was organised perfectly and Gareth is a joy to be around. I loved every minute and will definitely book myself onto another trip. #toldallmyfriendstheyhavetocomeVanessaMember Since 2018
“I didn’t really know what to expect on my first ever walking holiday and wasn’t very prepared if truth be known – lesson to all read the essential kit list especially waterproofs! It was great fun and what a lovely group of supportive and encouraging people, especially Gareth who did a great job looking after us all. I must admit at times I found it a bit challenging but what a great sense of achievement when we reached the top of the mountains (hills) I will definitely do this again.ElizabethMember Since 2016
