This is no trick, rather it’s a treat: spending Halloween weekend in the delightful surroundings of Patterdale in the Lake District, combining great walking with a spooktacular party on the Saturday.
For this jaunt we’ve hired the YHA near Glenridding, a lovely location for a spot of autumnal walking – whether it’s sauntering along a shore-side trail looking across at the mist swirling over Ullswater; tramping through leaves in ancient woodland or yomping up one of the higher peaks.
Add in the prospect of a full moon coinciding with 2020 Halloween and we thought why not celebrate with a bit of a knees-up on the Saturday evening; after all why should the kids have all the fun.
Please feel welcome to transform yourself into a zombie, ghoul, witch or other spooky creation as prizes will be doled out for the best-dressed on the evening!
All this and you can even take time out from the norm by doing something a little bit different – whether it’s walking with alpacas or visiting a gin distillery.
A packed weekend indeed!
Halloween Party Dates:
- Friday 30th October – Sunday 1st November 2020
YHA Patterdale is like a rural retreat, set in its own grounds with cracking views out to the fells and yet it is only a few minutes’ walk from the nearest hostelry if you want to enjoy a pint of the local brew.
You are welcome to arrive anytime from 5pm onwards where our host will show you around. Cups of tea will be on the go and no doubt many of the group will sidle into the comfy sofas in the living room to relax into the weekend.
We serve dinner later that evening and go through the plans for the next couple of days including the walking options and other pre-booked excursions (everything from visiting a gin distillery to strolling along with alpacas – full list will be available later next year).
Feel like a good leg stretcher of a walk up one of the nearby peaks such as Dollywaggon Pike or Helvellyn? Or do you fancy an easier, lower level walk along the shores of Ullswater?
Either are possible as we’ll offer a variety of walk options both today and tomorrow, each in the company of an experienced mountain guide.
Whichever option you choose, we’ll make sure the routes pack in plenty of Lake District loveliness. By mid to late afternoon we’ll return to the hostel, leaving plenty of time to re-energise and get ready for the Halloween party.
We’re expecting plenty of creativity when it comes to the evening’s attire. In fact the more spooktacular the better so let your imaginations run wild and we’ll reward the best with a memorable prize after we’ve served our Halloween-themed menu and the party has got underway.
Ok there might be some sore heads this morning, but the beauty of the Lakes is that the fresh air really does work wonders on those hangovers.
So with that in mind we’re up and out after a good breakfast to soak up that pure air with a good old yomp before enjoying one final lunch together (invariably in a pub or café) and then heading home.

“I didn’t really know what to expect on my first ever walking holiday and wasn’t very prepared if truth be known – lesson to all read the essential kit list especially waterproofs! It was great fun and what a lovely group of supportive and encouraging people, especially Gareth who did a great job looking after us all. I must admit at times I found it a bit challenging but what a great sense of achievement when we reached the top of the mountains (hills) I will definitely do this again.ElizabethMember Since 2016
My first Large Outdoors and (Ulster & the Giant's Causeway Walking Weekend) Irish experience was absolutely fantastic. Everything was organised perfectly and Gareth is a joy to be around. I loved every minute and will definitely book myself onto another trip. #toldallmyfriendstheyhavetocomeVanessaMember Since 2018
Well, for a non-walker it was certainly challenging but my word was it exhilarating! The feeling of achievement after every day, was just fabulous. The group we went with were all strangers on day one, but firm friends by the end of the week. The comradery on some of the tougher walks, helped me to the top…..and wow what views. Anyone thinking of doing it - don’t worry….just go for it!ClaireMember Since 2016
