If you’re looking for a fantastic idea for a challenge walk, pushing yourself while in the company of a friendly group and experienced leader, then look no further than the stunning Dorset Coast.

Lining the most beautiful stretches of the south coast of England, the Jurassic coast is named after the gold-mine of fossils to be found there, of dinosaurs and ancient life well before them. The coast is riddled with natural arches, bays, smugglers haunts and the wild vegetation of landslips.

Guided walking weekend to Lulworth Cove..

The challenge is a 21 mile walk, with around 1000m of ascent, from Swanage pier to Lulworth Cove, via Durlston Head Castle, St Alban’s Head and Kimmeridge Bay. With the constant joy of sea views over the English Channel and the ever-changing coastal landscape, you’ll find interest all around, and certainly more than enough to get you through to the grand finale at the most famous cove in Britain.

For this challenge we’re offering the chance to stay for the weekend at the hostel in Lulworth, or to come along just for the day walk.

In a nutshell:

  • A guided challenge day walk along the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, with a Large Outdoors leader to help you get through it!
  • Fantastic sea views over the Channel, with a beautiful coastline of rock formations and ancient fossils.
  • The chance to upgrade your challenge and stay with us for the weekend in Lulworth, with accommodation and food included – why not go and see Durdle Door on Sunday?

Jurassic Coast Challenge Dates:

  • Friday 25th – Sunday 27th September 2020 – Weekend Package
  • Saturday 26th September – Day Walk only

Itinerary

Friday

If you want to make a weekend of it and stay with us at YHA Lulworth, which we’ve hired exclusively for the weekend, book yourself on to the weekend package. You can arrive any time after 5pm on Friday. Dinner will be served at 8pm and there’s plenty of time to relax with endless hot drinks or a glass of something stronger.

Saturday

Those of you with us for the weekend will have a 6.30am breakfast and plenty of ingredients for packed lunches. We’ll assemble outside at 7.30am.

If you would like to come for the day walk, you’ll be meeting us at 7.30am at YHA Lulworth, where we’ll be bussed out to Swanage. From the pier we’ll get the essential start photographs and then head on our way. There will be leaders at a ratio of 1:10 so once the groups divide up for pace, they’ll be keeping you in your groups. The day is about the scenery and history as well as the challenge, and you’ll learn all about it on the way.

21 miles later, after plenty of rest stops and packed lunch, you’ll reach Lulworth Cove and then head up through Lulworth itself back to the YHA. One of the reasons we recommend staying for the weekend is that now is the time for a well-earned celebration!

Sunday

If you’re with us for the weekend, after a sit-down breakfast you have the chance to join us for an easier half-day walk on Sunday, seeing more of the local area. If you’d just prefer a bit of a fresh air but aren’t up for a walk, we certainly recommend going to see the natural arch at Durdle Door, the pin-up example of English coastal beauty!

After the walk is over at 1pm we’ll assemble somewhere for lunch before the weekend comes to an end.

What our members have to say...

  • My first Large Outdoors and (Ulster & the Giant's Causeway Walking Weekend) Irish experience was absolutely fantastic. Everything was organised perfectly and Gareth is a joy to be around. I loved every minute and will definitely book myself onto another trip. #toldallmyfriendstheyhavetocome

  • “I didn’t really know what to expect on my first ever walking holiday and wasn’t very prepared if truth be known – lesson to all read the essential kit list especially waterproofs! It was great fun and what a lovely group of supportive and encouraging people, especially Gareth who did a great job looking after us all. I must admit at times I found it a bit challenging but what a great sense of achievement when we reached the top of the mountains (hills) I will definitely do this again.

  • Well, for a non-walker it was certainly challenging but my word was it exhilarating! The feeling of achievement after every day, was just fabulous. The group we went with were all strangers on day one, but firm friends by the end of the week. The comradery on some of the tougher walks, helped me to the top…..and wow what views. Anyone thinking of doing it - don’t worry….just go for it!
