Each summer we host a gathering where we bring together a large group of peeps (both existing Large Outdoors guests and first timers) for a long weekend of walking mixed in with a party to celebrate our anniversary.
In 2020 we’ve pulled out all the stops with three-nights over August Bank Holiday in a fantastic location with uninterrupted views across to Derwentwater in the Lake District.
Our base in Borrowdale near Keswick is an elegant Georgian stately home which is now a hostel with its own private lawn sweeping down to the water’s edge.
As well as lining up a great choice of walks and a party on the Saturday evening, there’s also the chance to try a host of different activities – llama trekking anybody?
- Chill out while exploring the house’s 17 acres of grounds including its own waterfall
- Challenge yourself or simply choose a relaxing stroll from the various walk options.
- Charge up your battery in readiness for some summer revelry with some great fellow party-goers.
- Change what you’d normally do by trying out a new activity.
- August Bank Holiday 2020 – Friday 28th – Monday 31st August
Wow is all you’ll be saying as you trundle down the drive towards the weekend’s mansion house which wouldn’t look out of place in a BBC period drama.
Park up and feast your eyes on the picture-perfect sight of Derwentwater but don’t worry there’ll be time enough to sit and soak up those views.
Instead step inside where our hosts will be multi-tasking, making cups of tea, introducing guests and no doubt cracking a few jokes before turning to the serious task of preparing the evening’s meal for the group.
By the time we’re all tucking in, the banter will be well underway setting the tone nicely for the rest of the weekend.
Saturday, Sunday and Monday
Fuelled up by a hearty breakfast we lay out plans for the day ahead including the walk options and the arrangements for the other activities that people may have chosen.
Each day you can choose from at least four different guided walk options ranging from gentle 5-7 mile ambles, more challenging summit hikes right up to long full day treks.
While some walks will start from our front door, we’ll need to travel to the start of many of these walks so be prepared to car share.
With the Lake District as our playground you’ll understand there’s an almost infinite number of walking routes but expect peaks such as Hay Stacks, Cat Bells, Scafell Pike and Great Gable to be included while lake-side ambles might include Buttermere and, of course, Derwentwater.
On Monday we will be offering a mix of full days and a few half days for those that may wish to head off sooner.
If you fancy a break from walking then there’s a choice of other activities that we can book for you. Please note while the walks are included in the cost of the weekend, the additional activities will be a separate, additional cost. Below is an idea of what might be available – we’ll have the final schedule available around Easter.
Join our team for a friendly and fun few hours as we head over to the Lingholm estate to take some alpacas for a walk.
A one-day wild swimming experience exploring the lakes and rivers. You will either need a wetsuit for this or a limited number can be hired in advance.
Introduction to climbing:
Let us take you out for a day to discover climbing. Aimed at complete beginners or those who have tried a bit of indoor climbing, we include all the kit.
Two days spent learning essential navigation skills using the Lake District fells as our school ground. It’s fun as well as educational and will leave you feeling much more confident heading out for a hike.
Paddle Boarding and kayaking day
This day will involve a morning’s kayaking and an afternoon of stand up paddle boarding. If the weather is a tad windy, we won’t be able to paddleboard so a full day’s kayaking will be offered.
Saturday and Sunday evenings
As it’s our party weekend the evenings are worthy of a special note. If it’s a balmy summer’s evening we’ll plan on a barbecue to make the most of the lawn and the lakeside.
There’ll be a fairy sprinkling of music too to get in the party spirit.

“I didn’t really know what to expect on my first ever walking holiday and wasn’t very prepared if truth be known – lesson to all read the essential kit list especially waterproofs! It was great fun and what a lovely group of supportive and encouraging people, especially Gareth who did a great job looking after us all. I must admit at times I found it a bit challenging but what a great sense of achievement when we reached the top of the mountains (hills) I will definitely do this again.ElizabethMember Since 2016
My first Large Outdoors and (Ulster & the Giant's Causeway Walking Weekend) Irish experience was absolutely fantastic. Everything was organised perfectly and Gareth is a joy to be around. I loved every minute and will definitely book myself onto another trip. #toldallmyfriendstheyhavetocomeVanessaMember Since 2018
Well, for a non-walker it was certainly challenging but my word was it exhilarating! The feeling of achievement after every day, was just fabulous. The group we went with were all strangers on day one, but firm friends by the end of the week. The comradery on some of the tougher walks, helped me to the top…..and wow what views. Anyone thinking of doing it - don’t worry….just go for it!ClaireMember Since 2016
