Pembrokeshire in the summer is a delight to behold but to make it even more special we’re organising a walking weekend just before the schools break up and the families descend.
Our base is a hostel which was once an inn and which stands in an idyllic cliff top setting overlooking the Teifi Estuary and the huge swathe of Poppit Sands
We’re planning to make the most of our location with walks along the coastal paths, a night-time beach amble gazing up at the stars and a barbecue in the garden where you can raise a glass to the setting sun!
In a nutshell:
- Make the most of a great coastal location before schools out.
- Discover the delights of walking the stunning Pembrokeshire Coastal Path
- Marvel at the wonders of the estuary’s natural world as well as fantastic Welsh heritage.
- Slip into relaxed mode as you walk with other like-minded peeps.
We defy anybody not to be impressed with the location of YHA Poppit Sands which hugs the hillside and has five acres of grounds reaching down to the sea below.
We have exclusive use of the hostel and so feel free to pitch up any time after 5pm whereupon you’ll soon settle into the surroundings as you chat away to the others while keeping one eye on the beautiful seascape.
By the time we dish up the evening meal that good old coastal air will have weaved its magic relaxation spell and you’ll be itching to get out and discover Pembrokeshire’s wonders.
How about breakfast with grandstand views across the estuary, or even better (with warmer weather) tuck in while you’re sitting outside absorbing the sea air – both options are entirely possible!
After packing up lunch we stride out for the first of our two days’ of yomping. Our route will vary between a shorter amble and a longer linear walk where we pop on the Poppit Rocket, the local bus, to venture further along the coast before striding back.
Whatever route we decide, you can expect the combination of spectacular headland views, secret coves, a fair sprinkling of wildlife (including possible sightings of dolphins and porpoises), and intriguing ancient landmarks that will all keep interest-levels high.
Back at base, there’s plenty of down-time for simply sitting with a good book, enjoying a pint of beer or exploring the grounds, before we do like the Aussies do and fire up the Barbie!
For those who just can’t get enough of the surroundings we’re also plotting an after-dark foray along the beach for a spot of stargazing before we turn-in for the night.
Like a well-oiled machine our group will be packed and ready for the off this morning as we venture out for our final day’s walk before saying goodbye to Pembrokeshire and heading home.

“I didn’t really know what to expect on my first ever walking holiday and wasn’t very prepared if truth be known – lesson to all read the essential kit list especially waterproofs! It was great fun and what a lovely group of supportive and encouraging people, especially Gareth who did a great job looking after us all. I must admit at times I found it a bit challenging but what a great sense of achievement when we reached the top of the mountains (hills) I will definitely do this again.ElizabethMember Since 2016
My first Large Outdoors and (Ulster & the Giant's Causeway Walking Weekend) Irish experience was absolutely fantastic. Everything was organised perfectly and Gareth is a joy to be around. I loved every minute and will definitely book myself onto another trip. #toldallmyfriendstheyhavetocomeVanessaMember Since 2018
Well, for a non-walker it was certainly challenging but my word was it exhilarating! The feeling of achievement after every day, was just fabulous. The group we went with were all strangers on day one, but firm friends by the end of the week. The comradery on some of the tougher walks, helped me to the top…..and wow what views. Anyone thinking of doing it - don’t worry….just go for it!ClaireMember Since 2016
