Take on this beautiful challenge through the valleys of the White Peak...
DurationSingle Day Event
Difficulty Level3 Three
Taking on a big challenge is much more satisfying when you have the support of a friendly group, and a leader to do the navigating. It’s even better when you have beautiful scenery to look at and a new area to explore.
The Six Dales Challenge is just that; at 26 miles and 1000 metres of ascent, it’s a big day out that we aim to complete within 12 hours. It runs through the valleys and farmland of the White Peak area of the Peak District National Park.
Though the Peak District is famous for its upland moors, the White Peak is a totally different world. You can expect to see limestone grassland, wildlife, wild flowers and pretty villages, wandering along grassy paths and leafy lanes. We’ll go through nature reserves, saunter through woodlands, and follow streams. It’s a truly peaceful part of English countryside, and a far cry from more gruelling mountain challenges.
Starting from the village of Hartington, we walk through the following dales: Wolfscote Dale, Biggin Dale, Long Dale, Bradford Dale and Lathkill Dale. We’ll be passing by the villages of Youlgreave, Monyash and Biggin, meaning that if you decide the challenge is too much, it’s possible to leave easily.
We’ll meet outside the Hartington Farm Shop and Café (also Tourist Information, where there are public toilets) in Hartington at 06:30am, to start walking at 06:45am. Please be aware that shops won’t be open in Hartington at this time, so you’ll need to have food and water with you for the day when we meet.
We then have 26 miles of beautiful countryside paths ahead of us! We’ll arrive back in Hartington by 7pm, just in time for a celebratory drink!
Good to Know:
We’ll meet outside the Hartington Farm Shop and Cafe at 06:30am. There is a nearby car park at Parson’s Field, which can be found at SK17 0BE. Please do not park outside residents’ houses in Hartington.
Address: Hartington Farm Shop, Unit 1 Mill Ln, Hartington, Buxton SK17 0AN
- Qualified leader to lead the group along the route, giving you motivational support and keeping the group at the right pace to complete the challenge.
- All leaders are first aid trained.
- Office support in the build-up to the challenge, including training tips and equipment advice.
- Sociable walking group, make friends whilst helping each other through the challenge, our guided Six Dales Challenges are perfect for solo challengers, groups, friends and couples.
You can find the required equipment list for the day on our website here.
Although we pass close to villages, there are no guaranteed refreshment stops on the route, as it means diverting off the route and taking longer on the walk. There will be stops built in to the walk to allow everyone to eat. Please bring at least 2 litres of water and food for 12 hours.
Leaving the Challenge, and Cut-Off points:
The aim is to complete the challenge in under 12 hours, and our leaders will do their best to ensure that everyone who has the ability and desire to do this gets the chance to. Therefore there are several ‘cut-off’ points; if the group fails to make these cut-off points then our leaders will have to ask those slowing the group down to leave the challenge. We will have advice about how to return to Hartington, but you’ll need to have some money with you to take a bus/taxi.
If you decide that you would prefer not to continue with the challenge, our leaders will also be able to advise you on the best way back to the start. As this is a countryside area, the best way will probably be a taxi, so please have some money available on the walk.
There are a large number of options for places to stay in Hartington and surrounding villages, if you decide to stay before and/or after the challenge. There is also a YHA in the village.
Private Group Options:
We can organise a private Six Dales Challenge on any day of the year. The main season is April to September, which makes the most of the available day light hours but with a private group we can arrange it to suit your needs.
Groups and Corporates challengers – if there are more than 6 of you please contact us for your own group discount code or to hire your own private guide.

What our members have to say...
My first Large Outdoors and (Ulster & the Giant's Causeway Walking Weekend) Irish experience was absolutely fantastic. Everything was organised perfectly and Gareth is a joy to be around. I loved every minute and will definitely book myself onto another trip. #toldallmyfriendstheyhavetocomeVanessaMember Since 2018
Well, for a non-walker it was certainly challenging but my word was it exhilarating! The feeling of achievement after every day, was just fabulous. The group we went with were all strangers on day one, but firm friends by the end of the week. The comradery on some of the tougher walks, helped me to the top…..and wow what views. Anyone thinking of doing it - don’t worry….just go for it!ClaireMember Since 2016
“I didn’t really know what to expect on my first ever walking holiday and wasn’t very prepared if truth be known – lesson to all read the essential kit list especially waterproofs! It was great fun and what a lovely group of supportive and encouraging people, especially Gareth who did a great job looking after us all. I must admit at times I found it a bit challenging but what a great sense of achievement when we reached the top of the mountains (hills) I will definitely do this again.ElizabethMember Since 2016
