Join us in the fantastic south Lake District, where we’ll head out from our base near Hawkshead to explore the local area. There will be walks on offer to suit all abilities, visiting the nearby Grizedale forest, wandering along the lakeshores Windermere or Tarn Hows, and gazing up at the peak of the Old Man of Coniston.
Winter has come to an end, the flowers are out, and the days are longer; there’s no better time to discover the joys of walking in the countryside with a friendly group on gentle walks where you’ll really appreciate all that nature has to offer.
We’re staying just a short distance from Beatrix Potter’s old home at Near Sawrey, and not far from Coniston Water, the setting for Swallows and Amazons, so it’s the ideal location for all those childhood images of what the idyllic English Lake District should be.
We’ll also have extra activities on offer on the Sunday, so you can complete your weekend by learning something new, or finding a different way to enjoy the countryside.
In a nutshell:
- Enjoy a weekend away in the beautiful South Lakes when the spring flowers are in bloom.
- Meet a friendly bunch of people, who are all here to get out for a gentle guided walk and enjoy the scenery.
- Let us worry about food, navigation and the weather while you relax in the lounge and enjoy the landscape.
- Explore the area made famous by Beatrix Potter and Swallows and Amazons.
You’re welcome to arrive from 5pm, where the Large Outdoors team will welcome you and introduce you to your companions for the weekend. You’re welcome to help yourself to the endless hot drinks on supply, or of course settle down with a glass of something stronger.
Dinner is served at 8pm, and we’ll go over the plans for the weekend, confirming walking routes and options.
After a leisurely sit-down breakfast and the chance to make packed lunches we’ll head off on our guided walks. Nearby we have Grizedale forest, Windermere, Coniston Water and the low fells south of Little Langdale, including the stunning area around Tarn Hows. There will be woodland, waterfalls and views of the high hills. Walks will be made clear on the Friday evening, but whatever you choose you’ll be in for a day of fantastic views and exploration, suitable for all abilities.
We aim to return to the hostel for mid-afternoon, where there’ll be plenty of time to relax before dinner is served. You’re more than welcome to head off to the pub in Hawkshead, or bring some drinks of your own into the hostel with you.
We will be offering at least 3 walk levels today.
After breakfast we’ll pack up and check out of the hostel. Today we will have the option to head out on a half day walk which aims to finish at around 1pm somewhere we can get lunch before heading off. Or for those that wish to explore Lakeland we will be offering another full day out aiming to finish for around 4pm.
There are lots of options for walks today, including heading up into Little Langdale, Loughrigg or around Ambleside, or perhaps over to Troutbeck. We’ll make sure you see somewhere new, so you really get the most out of your time here.

What our members have to say...
Well, for a non-walker it was certainly challenging but my word was it exhilarating! The feeling of achievement after every day, was just fabulous. The group we went with were all strangers on day one, but firm friends by the end of the week. The comradery on some of the tougher walks, helped me to the top…..and wow what views. Anyone thinking of doing it - don’t worry….just go for it!ClaireMember Since 2016
“I didn’t really know what to expect on my first ever walking holiday and wasn’t very prepared if truth be known – lesson to all read the essential kit list especially waterproofs! It was great fun and what a lovely group of supportive and encouraging people, especially Gareth who did a great job looking after us all. I must admit at times I found it a bit challenging but what a great sense of achievement when we reached the top of the mountains (hills) I will definitely do this again.ElizabethMember Since 2016
My first Large Outdoors and (Ulster & the Giant's Causeway Walking Weekend) Irish experience was absolutely fantastic. Everything was organised perfectly and Gareth is a joy to be around. I loved every minute and will definitely book myself onto another trip. #toldallmyfriendstheyhavetocomeVanessaMember Since 2018
