Charity Challenge: Only A Pavement Away

Hiking up Snowdon to raise money for a charitable cause is no mean feat. It takes grit, a positive attitude, and a whole lot of organisation - from raising funds and signing team members up, to making sure everybody is in the right place at the right time. But when it all comes together, it’s nothing short of incredible!

Only A Pavement Away is a UK-based charity that connects hospitality employers and charities that work with people facing homelessness, prison leavers and veterans who are struggling to get into work, helping them carve a pathway into the workforce. Since starting in 2018, Only A Pavement Away has placed 235 people into work, adding approximately £5 million to the economy.

Raising funds to support those returning to work is an important part of the charity’s work, so they’re always looking to do so in exciting ways. While searching for support for its next challenge - conquering Snowdon - Only A Pavement Away discovered the perfect partner in Large Outdoors.

The charity’s goals for its Snowdon mission were threefold: bringing in vital funds for its work, building team and network relationships, and raising awareness of the work it does. Masterminded by volunteer Georgie Mangham, the idea was to create an event that was much fun as it was impactful.

Engaging Large Outdoors to provide guiding and logistics support, the charity quickly established what turned out to be a hugely popular fundraising event.

A team of intrepid walkers gathered early on a cloud morning at Pen y Pass, the starting point of Snowdon’s beautiful Miners’ Track. With high spirits and big smiles, walking boots were laced-up and the first of many steps were made.

“With any of our activities, our aim is to raise funds in a fun and exhilarating way,” said Greg Mangham, Founder and CEO of Only A Pavement Away.

Only A Pavement Away’s fundraisers walked with Large Outdoors guides, who made sure everybody that wanted to was able to reach the summit safely, comfortably, and with a big smile on their face.

“Our experience on the day was amazing,” continued Greg. “We’re still talking about it. The sense of camaraderie the challenge created continues to promote Only A Pavement Away’s work and values.”

“The team-building, personal stories, and laughter in the face of adversity (a tough walk with challenging weather near the summit) were all standout moments from the day.”

“We exceeded all of our fundraising targets, and the challenge was great for raising awareness of our work. A number of our walkers exceeded their personal expectations, too.”

Buoyed by their Snowdon success, the team at Only A Pavement Away has already got its sights set on next year’s challenges, including hikes, marathons, and a big Highland walking challenge.
