Walking the Northumberland Coast and Hadrian’s Wall

Join Large Outdoors for a leisurely-paced walking holiday that showcases the very best of Northumberland’s coastline and inland gems. With five nights based at The Amble Inn in the harbour town of Amble, this trip offers a warm welcome, fully guided walks, and the chance to explore dramatic coastal scenery, castles, islands, and Roman history in great company.

You’ll enjoy a cooked breakfast each morning before heading out for the day’s walk, with time built in for a brew, local exploration, or just soaking up the views. Evenings are relaxed and sociable – meals out in local pubs or the hotel restaurant give everyone a chance to unwind and chat. For those joining without a car, we offer a free collection from Alnmouth train station at 18:00 on arrival day. Once you’ve arrived, we’ll take care of all transport during the trip.

Expect a mix of coastal and countryside walks at a comfortable pace, with plenty of stops and no rush. The focus is on enjoying the scenery, the stories, and the social side of walking with a small group.

Note for New Year’s Eve trips: This holiday also runs over New Year, with a celebratory dinner included on New Year’s Eve. Due to tide times in 2025, the barefoot pilgrimage to Lindisfarne will not be possible, but we will still visit the island and explore on foot.

Suggested Itinerary

Here’s what we’ve got planned - of course, we may have to offer alternatives or make amendments if the weather misbehaves or other unexpected situations arise! Please note, walk order may change due to weather or tide times for Lindisfarne.

  • Check-in from 15:00. Our free pick-up from Alnmouth station is at 18:00 (must be booked in advance). Your host will meet you in the bar shortly after for a relaxed welcome evening at the hotel.

  • We head north along the coast for a relaxed walk around Lindisfarne. Depending on tide times, there's the opportunity to join an optional barefoot pilgrimage across the sands. There’s time to explore the abbey, walk the coastline, or try some local mead.

New Year’s Note: Due to tide timings, the barefoot crossing isn’t possible on the New Year’s trip, but we’ll still visit the island by vehicle with plenty of time to walk and explore on foot.

  • We head inland to the Sill and walk a scenic section of Hadrian’s Wall, taking in the undulating landscape and historic remains. Expect well-trodden paths, far-reaching views, and time to explore the wall’s features and visitor centre.

  • Today’s walk begins at High Newton-by-the-Sea and follows the coast north through Seahouses (with time for a brew) and onto Bamburgh. The route includes long beaches, open views, and the chance to explore Bamburgh’s imposing castle (entry not included).

  • A final full day on the coast with options to explore the charming fishing village of Craster, walk to the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle, and spend time in Alnmouth. Expect classic sea views and time to enjoy the coastal feel.

  • We stay close to base with a shorter walk along the local coastline near Amble. There’s time for a final brew or early lunch before saying goodbye. For those travelling by train, we aim to drop you at Alnmouth station between 13:00–15:00. Please book an open return where possible.

New Year’s Note: A special New Year’s Eve dinner is included in the trip price for our festive edition of this walking break.
