October is a magical month for stargazers in the Northern Hemisphere, and there's no better place to witness the celestial wonders than the North York Moors National Park.

The North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales National Parks have both just joined the exclusive worldwide band of Dark Sky Reserves which reminded us just how fantastic an experience it is to enjoy the simple pleasures of walking and standing under a pristine night sky.

The North York Moors is my local patch and I often think: ‘How lucky am I?’ as I stride out on another good walking route without having to travel any great distance.

Now it’s a bit of a mantra of Large Outdoors that a good walk needs to include at least one opportunity to tuck into a slice of cake, either on route or at the end of the hike.

So as you can imagine I’ve been doing quite a bit of research over the years and narrowing down the list to just six has been an effort but here goes:
