Small Group Walking Holiday – Northern Lake District Guided Walks
This five-night guided walking holiday is based in the quieter Northern Lake District and is part of our car-free experiences range. You’ll enjoy four full days of fell walking plus a shorter walk on the final day – all designed for those who love being out on the hills and want to return to a comfortable hotel each evening.
We’ll be staying at a welcoming hotel in the northern Lakes, with a cooked breakfast buffet each morning and evening meals out at local pubs and restaurants (evening meals not included in the trip price). Once you arrive – whether by our scheduled pick-up from Penrith station or by driving yourself – everything else is taken care of. We’ll use our vehicle to transport the group to and from walk start points each day, so there’s no need to worry about the logistics.
Each day includes a fully guided walk, with routes selected based on weather and group preferences. Options include the striking ridgelines of Blencathra and Skiddaw, classic routes in the Buttermere Valley such as Haystacks, High Stile, or Great Gable, the sweeping Newlands Horseshoe, or more well-known fells like Helvellyn and Catbells.
This trip is rated as active, with walks focused on reaching summits and enjoying long days out. You’ll need to be hill-fit and comfortable on rough terrain, but the aim is always to keep things sociable, supportive, and enjoyable – with time for great conversations and rewarding views along the way.
Perfect for solo walkers, friends, or couples wanting a sociable walking break without the stress of route planning or driving – just turn up and enjoy walking the Lake District in good company.
Suggested Itinerary
Here’s what we’ve got planned - of course, we may have to offer alternatives or make amendments if the weather misbehaves or other unexpected situations arise!
-
Check-in is from 15:00. For those arriving by train, we offer a collection from Penrith station at 17:00 (must be pre-booked).
In the evening, we’ll meet for a group dinner at the hotel and run through plans and options for the week ahead.
-
Each day begins with a cooked breakfast. We’ll then stop at a local shop for you to grab packed lunch items before heading out into the fells. Walks may include:
Routes around Blencathra, Skiddaw, and the Caldbeck Fells
Exploring the Buttermere Valley and peaks like High Stile, Haystacks, and Great Gable
Scenic ridge walks such as the Newlands Horseshoe or up Catbells
Options to tackle Helvellyn depending on the weather and group
We’ll aim for variety across the week with each day adapted to the group, conditions, and energy levels. After each walk, we’ll return to the hotel with time to freshen up before heading out to a local pub for dinner.
-
We’ll round off the trip with a shorter half-day walk, finishing by 15:00. There’ll be time for a brew before we say our goodbyes. Those using the train can expect to be back at Penrith between 16:00–17:00 – we recommend booking an open return ticket.
