Exploring the Yorkshire Coast with a Sociable Walking Group
This weekend is all about coastal scenery, stories of smugglers, abbey ruins, fishing villages and time to explore some iconic Yorkshire locations. We follow stretches of the Cleveland Way, visit Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay, and walk part of the former railway line known as the Cinder Track. Expect cliff-top paths, sea views, maritime history, relaxed company and plenty of chances to chat, wander and enjoy this part of the world at an easy pace.

Suggested Itinerary
Here’s what we’ve got planned - of course, we may have to offer alternatives or make amendments if the weather misbehaves or other unexpected situations arise!
-
Check in from 15:00, then meet your guide and fellow walkers in the hotel bar before dinner. We eat in the hotel so anyone arriving later can easily join us without having to go back out or locate the group elsewhere. It’s a relaxed evening with time to settle in and get to know one another.
For those arriving by train, we offer a free collection from Scarborough station at 18:00. This must be booked in advance, either during the checkout process or by emailing the office at least 7 days before the trip. This forms part of our public transport accessible approach to the weekend.
-
Distance: 7–9 miles* (11–14 km)
After a cooked breakfast buffet, we travel up the coast to Whitby. From here we take a local bus to Robin Hood’s Bay where you’ll have time to explore the narrow streets, independent shops and the village’s rich smuggling history. We then follow the Cleveland Way along the coast back to Whitby, with sea cliffs, bays and classic Yorkshire coastal scenery along the way.
On arrival in Whitby, there’s free time to explore the abbey ruins, shops, or simply relax by the harbour. We round off the day with fish and chips, paid individually so you can choose when and what you eat. After tea, your guide will drive you back to the hotel.
-
Distance: 5–7 miles* (8–11 km)
After breakfast and check-out, we head north to Hayburn Wyke. Our route begins on the Cinder Track, once part of the Whitby–Scarborough railway, then picks up the Cleveland Way to return to the coast. We finish back at Hayburn Wyke where there’s time for a drink at the pub before the trip rounds off with a return to Scarborough for your onward travel.
Discover the Yorkshire Coast on Foot
Stretching from salt-washed headlands to sheltered bays, the Yorkshire Coast blends striking coastal scenery with stories that span centuries. Walking here brings together sea cliffs, old railway paths, moorland edges and villages shaped by fishing, trade and folklore.
Along the way you’ll find reminders of shipwrecks, smugglers, early industry and the region’s maritime heritage. Seabirds nest on the cliffs, seasonal wildlife moves through the coves, and the geology reveals layers of Jurassic history. Whether it’s the coastal paths near Whitby or the steep lanes of Robin Hood’s Bay, every section has its own character and rhythm.
Leisurely coastal walking in this area offers a relaxed way to explore, taking in the views, fresh air and constant shift of tides – all with the space to enjoy the journey rather than rush it.
Robin Hood’s Bay – Stories, Smugglers and Coastal Folklore
Robin Hood’s Bay has long captured people’s imagination, though there’s no firm link to the famous outlaw himself. The name may come from old coastal ballads or earlier Norse traditions, but its real history is just as compelling.
During the 18th century, the village became one of the busiest smuggling centres on the Yorkshire Coast. Rum, tea, brandy and tobacco were secretly moved through a warren of interconnected cottages, with stories of goods passing from attic to cellar without ever touching the street. Today, the steep lanes, sea views and hidden alleys still carry that sense of mystery, with local legends and maritime history woven into almost every corner.
