Constable Country Walking Break – Suffolk Villages & Riverside Walks
Explore the landscapes that inspired John Constable on this sociable guided walking break through the Suffolk and Essex countryside. Based in Colchester, this weekend combines riverside walking, historic villages, rolling farmland, and the gentle scenery that shaped some of England’s best-known paintings. Alongside the walking, there’s time to enjoy local pubs, relaxed evenings, and good company with fellow walkers.

What People Say
“A really friendly and relaxed walking weekend with lovely scenery and a great group. The mix of walking, villages, and evenings together worked really well.”
Exploring Constable Country
Constable Country is one of England’s most recognisable rural landscapes, centred around the River Stour and the villages of Dedham, Flatford, and Stoke-by-Nayland. The countryside here still feels remarkably similar to the scenes painted by John Constable over 200 years ago, with slow-moving rivers, open meadows, church towers, and timber-framed villages appearing much as they did in works like The Hay Wain.
Throughout the weekend, we’ll explore an area shaped by farming, waterways, and rural life, where old lanes connect small villages and riverside paths pass mills, churches, orchards, and fields. There’s also time to enjoy local cafés, country pubs, and the slower pace that makes this part of Suffolk and Essex so appealing.

Suggested Itinerary
Here’s what we’ve got planned - of course, we may have to offer alternatives or make amendments if the weather misbehaves or other unexpected situations arise!
-
Arrive at the hotel and settle in before meeting your Large Outdoors host and fellow walkers during the evening. For those travelling by train, there’s an optional collection from Colchester station.
Dinner on the first evening is at the hotel, making arrival nice and straightforward even if you’re travelling from further afield or arriving later in the evening. It’s a relaxed chance to get to know the group, enjoy a meal together, and ease into the weekend ahead.
-
After breakfast, we’ll travel into the heart of Constable Country for a full day exploring riverside paths, meadows, woodland tracks, and quiet lanes around Dedham and Flatford.
This walk takes in many of the landscapes featured in Constable’s paintings, including views connected to The Hay Wain and The Cornfield. Along the way, there’s time to stop in villages, enjoy the scenery, and learn more about the area’s connection to the artist and rural life along the River Stour.
The day’s walk is usually around 9.5 miles.
Back in Colchester, there’s time to freshen up before another relaxed group evening meal.
-
Our final walk explores quieter countryside around Leavenheath, Nayland, and Stoke-by-Nayland. Expect rolling farmland, orchards, woodland edges, and wide countryside views, with the church tower at Stoke-by-Nayland often visible across the landscape — another feature regularly appearing in Constable’s work.
The walk is usually around 8 miles before we return to Colchester during the afternoon.
As with all Large Outdoors trips, the exact plans may adapt depending on weather, local conditions, and the group.
