A Relaxed Spring Bank Holiday in Eryri (Snowdonia)

This three-night walking break in Eryri (Snowdonia) is designed as a proper long weekend away — enough time to switch off, stretch your legs and settle into good company.

Based near Capel Curig, we’re surrounded by some of the most accessible and varied walking in North Wales. Within a short drive you’ll find lakeside paths, wooded valleys, gentle hill routes and even coastal trails. That gives us the freedom to choose one well-suited walk each day while keeping the pace comfortable and enjoyable.

The focus of the weekend is simple: one carefully chosen walk per day, led at a steady, sociable pace. Expect around 6–9 miles on the main days, mostly on established paths with some steady sections and uneven ground in places. We’ll stop for proper lunch breaks, photos and conversation along the way. This isn’t about big mountain days or chasing distance. It’s about being outdoors, covering satisfying miles and returning each evening feeling pleasantly tired rather than worn out.

Spring Bank Holiday is a great time to visit. The hills are fresh and green, daylight stretches into the evening and there’s a real sense of the season opening up ahead.

As with all Large Outdoors trips, most people join on their own. A three-night break gives time to properly settle in, get to know each other and enjoy the rhythm of the weekend. By the end, you’ll have shared miles, meals and stories — and quite possibly made plans for the next trip before you’ve even left.

Suggested Itinerary

Here’s what we’ve got planned - of course, we may have to offer alternatives or make amendments if the weather misbehaves or other unexpected situations arise!

  • Arrive from 17:00 and make your way into the woodland setting near Capel Curig, where our cottage is tucked quietly among the trees. It’s a peaceful spot to begin the weekend — away from the main road, surrounded by fresh air and the sound of the forest.

Your host will greet you as you arrive, show you to your room and introduce you to the rest of the group as everyone filters in. There’s no rush. Pop the kettle on, settle into the lounge, or step outside for a short wander to stretch your legs after the journey.

Once we’re all together, we’ll enjoy dinner in the cottage. The first evening is intentionally relaxed — a chance to unwind, get to know each other and talk through the plan for the days ahead. Maps may appear on the table, ideas discussed, but nothing feels formal.

By the end of the evening, you’ll already feel like the weekend has properly begun — a gentle start before heading out walking in the days to come.

  • After a good night’s sleep and a proper breakfast, we’ll head out for one carefully chosen walk each day.

From our base near Capel Curig, we’re spoiled for choice. One day may take us on a circular route towards Llyn Crafnant, combining woodland paths with open views across the lake and surrounding hills. Another could explore the riverside and forest trails around Beddgelert, or the well-trodden paths near Betws-y-Coed with their mix of trees, water and gentle climbing.

If the weather is settled, we might head to the coast at Newborough Nature Reserve, walking through forest and dunes towards Llanddwyn Island for wide sea views and a completely different feel from the mountains.

Whichever routes we choose, expect 6–9 miles at a steady, comfortable pace. There’s no rush. We’ll take proper breaks, find good lunch spots and enjoy conversation as we go. The aim is to spend meaningful time outdoors rather than clock up distance.

Late afternoon, we return to the cottage, boots off and kettle on. There’s time to shower, put your feet up, or sit outside if the weather’s kind.

Evenings are part of the experience. We’ll eat well together in the cottage, share stories from the day and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere that builds as the weekend unfolds. With three nights away, there’s space to properly unwind — not just arrive and leave in a blur.

  • On our final morning, we’ll head out for a shorter 4–5 mile walk close to base. A final stretch of the legs, a chance to enjoy the surroundings one more time and round off the weekend gently.

We’ll return late morning or early afternoon, say our goodbyes and begin the journey home — refreshed, a little tired in a good way, and already thinking about where to walk next.
