Gower Coast Walking Weekend – A Sociable Coastal Escape…

Whether you’re new to walking weekends or have joined us before, the Gower is the perfect place to unwind, meet others, and enjoy the Welsh coastline at a gentle pace.

Each day you’ll have the option to join a leisurely or more active walk – both fully guided and designed to help you enjoy the Gower at your own pace. Our active routes are ideal for those who enjoy a good leg-stretcher along the coast, while our leisurely walks offer a more relaxed pace with plenty of time to take in the views and spot wildlife.

The Gower Peninsula was the UK’s first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – now a National Landscape – and it’s easy to see why. From wide sandy bays and tucked-away coves to clifftops alive with seabirds, the scenery is ever-changing and always refreshing.

In the evenings, there’s time to unwind back at the hostel – you’re welcome to bring your own drinks to enjoy in the garden or lounge, and we’ll serve up a simple, hearty evening meal. You’ll also have the option to pop into the local pub – a well-loved village spot just a short stroll away.

Expect a relaxed, social experience with plenty of time to talk, laugh, and enjoy being outdoors.

Suggested Itinerary

Here’s what we’ve got planned - of course, we may have to offer alternatives or make amendments if the weather misbehaves or other unexpected situations arise!

  • You can arrive any time from 17:00. If you’re early, the beach is just a minute’s walk from the venue – perfect for a wander or a seaside ice cream.

Your Large Outdoors host will be there to welcome you and introduce you to the rest of the group. We’ll gather around 20:00 for a relaxed dinner and a quick run-through of the weekend plans.

  • If you’re an early riser, why not head to the beach before breakfast for a bit of fresh air and wellness time?

Breakfast is served around 07:30 and includes cereal, toast, yoghurt, and fruit. You’ll also make up your own packed lunch from the supplies provided – think sandwiches, crisps, and cake. We cater for vegan and vegetarian diets; just let us know when booking.

Today we’ll offer two walk options:

    • Leisurely Walk – A relaxed route heading east towards Oxwich, exploring the dune systems and spotting wildlife along the way.

    • Active Walk – A longer route west along the coast path to Worm’s Head and Rhossili, following undulating clifftop paths with sweeping sea views. Along the way, we’ll pass ancient forts, caves, and hidden bays before returning inland to complete the loop.

After the walk, we’ll return to the hostel to relax. You’re welcome to bring drinks to enjoy in the garden or lounge, or wander over to the Ship Inn, a lovely local pub just metres from the door. Dinner will be served at the venue, giving us all a chance to catch up and chat about the day.

  • After a relaxed breakfast, we’ll check out of the hostel and have time for one final walk before heading home.

Options for today’s route may include exploring the coast around Three Cliffs Bay, returning to Rhossili and walking the ridge of Rhossili Down, or heading towards Oxwich for those who didn’t walk that way on Saturday.

We’ll aim to wrap up by early afternoon, with the chance to grab a drink or bite to eat at a local café before saying farewell to new friends and a refreshing weekend on the Gower.

Please note: On some days there could be a short drive required - where activities don’t start from the door of the accommodation. We don't include transport and participants normally car share.

  • At just over 70 square miles, the Gower peninsula in South Wales was the UK's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, protected for its wildlife and it's dramatic scenery. The coastline fluctuates between cliffs, wide sandy beaches, and sand dunes. Beyond the shore there are woodlands and moorland hills which frequently drop straight down to the beach.

At the western end, on either side of Rhossili Bay, are two headlands that become islands at high tide. The southern headland is the famous 'Worm's Head', a sea-serpent like line of rock and earth that forms the most westerly point of Gower. The whole of the coast is accessible via public rights of way, and there are also many inland paths, making the area easy to explore for walkers.
