Exploring the Isle of Wight
The Isle of Wight packs a surprising amount of variety into a relatively small island. One moment you’re walking beneath towering white cliffs with views across the Solent, and the next you’re following peaceful estuary paths, exploring traditional seaside towns, or wandering through quiet countryside.
The island has long been popular with walkers thanks to its mix of coastal scenery, rolling downs, historic harbours, and mild climate. Along the way, we may spot seabirds gliding along the cliffs, passing ferries crossing the Solent, and perhaps even red squirrels in some of the island’s wooded areas.
Beyond the walking itself, the Isle of Wight has a slower pace that suits this style of trip perfectly. There’s time to enjoy harbour cafés, browse small independent shops, stop for ice cream along the seafront, and simply enjoy being away for a few days with like-minded people.
Highlights
Walk to The Needles and along the western chalk cliffs
Explore coastal paths, estuaries, downs, and seaside towns
Visit places such as Yarmouth, Ventnor, Bembridge, and Shanklin

Car-free experience with transport included during the trip
Suggested Itinerary
Here’s what we’ve got planned - of course, we may have to offer alternatives or make amendments if the weather misbehaves or other unexpected situations arise!
-
Your walking break begins with collection from either East Cowes Ferry Terminal or Ryde Pier.
As we make our way across the island towards Sandown, we may stop off at a local point of interest such as the Isle of Wight Distillery, helping everyone settle into the slower pace of island life and begin getting to know the group.
After checking into the hotel, there may be time for a gentle stroll along the seafront before heading out together for our first evening meal.
-
Today we explore one of the island’s most famous areas, walking along the dramatic chalk cliffs near The Needles.
Starting around Totland Bay, we follow the coast with wide-reaching sea views before continuing towards Yarmouth and the Yar Estuary. This is one of the longer days of the trip, typically around 13 miles, but it rewards the effort with some of the island’s best scenery.
Back in Sandown, the evening is left free to relax before dinner together.
-
Today’s walk depends on conditions and the group, but may include routes around Bembridge, Seaview, Ventnor, or St Catherine’s Point.
These areas showcase a quieter side of the Isle of Wight, with a mixture of coastal paths, open downs, traditional villages, and sheltered bays. Distances are typically around 8–10 miles.
There’s usually time during the day to stop for coffee or a wander around one of the island’s coastal towns before returning to Sandown for our final evening together.
-
Before leaving the island, we enjoy a shorter walk of around 5–6 miles, often exploring peaceful countryside or estuary scenery such as Newtown Creek.
After the walk, we transfer back to the ferry terminals, with drop-offs usually around 15:00.
As always with Large Outdoors trips, plans may occasionally change depending on weather, ferry timings, or what the group is enjoying most during the break.
