The Area – Coast, Wildlife & Big Norfolk Skies

North Norfolk has a character all of its own. The coastline is broad and open, shaped by tide and wind rather than steep cliffs or busy resorts. Salt marshes stretch out towards the sea, creeks cut through mudflats and huge skies seem to dominate everything.

This is one of the richest areas for wildlife in England. In migration season the marshes fill with wading birds, and even outside peak times there’s always movement across the estuaries. Grey seals are often seen along the shoreline, especially near Holkham and Blakeney, and the sense of space makes every encounter feel unhurried.

Holkham’s vast beach backed by dunes and pine woodland is one of the great English coastal scenes. Wells-next-the-Sea brings colour and life — a working harbour, independent shops and traditional seaside atmosphere without the crowds.

We’re based in King’s Lynn, one of England’s most important medieval ports. Its Hanseatic Quarter and riverside setting reflect centuries of maritime trade. If you arrive early, there’s plenty to explore — from historic warehouses and cobbled lanes to riverside walks along the Great Ouse.

A Sociable Weekend by the Sea

This trip is designed around easy, shared days out. The walking is largely flat and steady, allowing space for conversation and connection. Many guests join on their own and quickly find themselves part of the group.

Your guide will drive you to the coast each day, keeping logistics simple and allowing us to focus on the best stretches of shoreline. Evenings are relaxed — dinner together, stories from the day and the easy feeling of a weekend well spent.

If you’re looking for sea air, wildlife, wide horizons and a friendly group to explore with, this Norfolk coast break delivers exactly that.

Suggested Itinerary

Here’s what we’ve got planned - of course, we may have to offer alternatives or make amendments if the weather misbehaves or other unexpected situations arise!

  • You’re welcome to check in from 15:00. If you arrive earlier, take some time to explore King’s Lynn or relax before meeting the group.

For those arriving by train, we offer a free collection from King’s Lynn station at 18:00. This must be booked in advance — please see the Essential Information section below.

We’ll meet in the hotel bar from 18:15 before enjoying dinner together in the hotel restaurant. This makes arrival easy — if you’re running later, you can simply join us for the meal.

Your host will outline the weekend plans, and the evening is a relaxed chance to settle in, chat and start getting to know the group.

  • Today is all about the North Norfolk Coast.

As this is a car-free trip, we’ll use our minibus to reach Burnham Deepdale. On arrival, there’s time to browse Dalegate Market and its independent shops before we begin walking.

The route is wonderfully flat and easy underfoot, following flood defences and salt marsh paths. The walking is leisurely and steady, perfect for conversation as we cross open marshland alive with birdlife.

We’ll pause in Burnham Overy Staithe for a hot drink before continuing towards Holkham Beach — a vast sweep of sand backed by dunes and pine woods. Keep an eye out for seals along the shoreline.

We’ll wander along the beach before reaching the Lookout Café overlooking Holkham National Nature Reserve — an ideal place to pause.

A final stretch through pine woodland and marshland brings us into Wells-next-the-Sea. Here you’ll have time to explore the town’s independent shops, grab a coffee or enjoy well-earned cake.

While you explore Wells, your guide will return via the coastal bus to collect the minibus. We’ll then head back to the hotel to freshen up before an evening meal at a local pub.

  • After breakfast, we’ll check out and head to Snettisham on the coast.

We’ll explore Snettisham Beach and the RSPB Snettisham Nature Reserve, famous for its vast mudflats and seasonal bird spectacles. At certain times of year, thousands of wading birds gather here in remarkable formations — one of Norfolk’s most impressive wildlife displays.

The walking is once again flat and easy underfoot, following flood banks, shoreline and reserve paths. It’s a relaxed final morning with plenty of time to take in the coastal atmosphere.

Before the weekend ends, there’s time for refreshments — perhaps even some classic seaside fish and chips — before we return to King’s Lynn.

We aim to drop train travellers back at the station between 14:00–16:00, depending on the day’s pace and traffic.

Walking in Norfolk: Coastal Charm and Countryside Delights

Norfolk is a walker’s dream, combining tranquil countryside with a dramatic coastline that’s part of the North Norfolk Coast National Landscape. Famous for its sweeping sandy beaches, salt marshes, and big skies, the area offers an unspoiled natural beauty that’s perfect for relaxed exploration.

The Norfolk Coast Path winds through charming villages, alongside ancient flint churches, and past vast stretches of coastline where the sea meets endless horizons. Wildlife enthusiasts can enjoy spotting wading birds in the salt marshes and seals along the beaches, while history lovers will appreciate the stories woven into the landscape, from the royal estate at Sandringham to medieval harbour towns like King’s Lynn.

Beyond the coast, Norfolk’s countryside is equally captivating. The woodland trails and parkland of Sandringham provide peaceful walking routes with a regal backdrop, and the mix of rural paths and coastal tracks means there’s always a variety of terrain to explore.

Whether you’re drawn to the salty air of the coastline, the calm of countryside paths, or simply the joy of walking in a region that feels untouched by time, Norfolk offers a truly rewarding experience for all who visit.
