Gallery - Lake District Walking Weekend - Honister. September 2023

In September Large Outdoors made their first ever visit to Honister Haus YHA and enjoyed two days of more active walking in this part of the Lake District National Park.

On Saturday we offered 2 walks, one to Great Gable via  Grey Knott, Brandreth and Green Gable. The other walk used the great valley bus service to get to Buttermere. We ascended the steep path up to Red Pike with its Eskdale Granite summit. The views over the twin lakes were beautiful. Having gained height we now had a great walk along the broad ridge to High Stile then continuing further to High Crags. Next is a super steep descent down to Seat  before catching breath at Scarth Gap. From here is a gentle scramble up to the summit of Hay Stacks with its many tops and tarns. What Hay Stacks lacks in stature it makes up for in views. We then walked through Honister  slate quarries back to the Hostel

On Sunday we explored the north side of the Buttermere Valley. Back on the bus to the village then up the delightfully named High Snockrigg. A short bog trot later and we were ascending to the broad summit of Robinson. From here it’s not far to Hindscarth with its spectacular views across the Newlands Valley and across the Skiddaw and Blencathra in the distance. Finally we reached our last objective when we had photographs next the shapely summit cairn of Dalehead before heading back to Honister after a great new Large Outdoors weekend.
