Gallery - Signature - Dark Skies Weekend in the North York Moors, November 2023

Walking, Stargazing and North Yorkshire hospitality with our Dark Skies weekend in the North York Moors National Park.

On Friday night, we were graced with crystal-clear skies. A variety of telescopes provided us with spectacular views: Jupiter, flanked by its four Galilean moons, and Saturn's majestic rings were the highlights. A special treat was witnessing the Starlink satellites gliding overhead. We delved into the art of constellation identification, enriched by their fascinating stories. The Milky Way was a sight to behold, its luminous arc stretching across the sky. Our Stellina telescope captured stunning images of the distant Pinwheel Galaxy, M101, located 21 million light-years away. It was an extraordinary night.

Saturday started with a delightful breakfast, setting us up for our walk across Low Danby Moor. The recent rains had left the ground firm, enhancing the vibrant autumn hues. At the moor's summit, a rare sight awaited us: a short-eared owl in a playful chase with a kestrel. The expansive view across the northern reaches of the North York Moors was breathtaking. Our journey concluded with a stop at the Danby North York Moors National Park Centre and a well-earned, sizable slice of cake. In the evening, we engaged in a workshop exploring the mysteries of nebulae, galaxies, and black holes.

Sunday's adventure led us to Ainsthorpe Ring, a site resonant with history, marked by ancient standing stones from the Bronze Age. We descended into Little Fryup Dale, winding our way past Danby Castle and Duck Bridge. Our weekend culminated with a hearty Sunday lunch at the pub, before we all went our separate ways.
