A Week Exploring the Outer Hebrides

The Outer Hebrides feel wonderfully removed from the pace of everyday life. Long empty beaches, winding single-track roads, sea birds overhead, crofting communities, and huge open skies all combine to create one of the most peaceful parts of Scotland to explore on foot.

This guided walking holiday takes you across South Uist, North Uist, Benbecula, Barra, Lewis and Harris, with a carefully planned mix of coastal walking, wildlife watching, scenic drives, island culture and relaxed sociable evenings back at our lodge.

For 2027, we’ll be based for the full trip at Grogarry Lodge, a grand former sporting lodge owned by the local community. Profits from the lodge are returned directly back into the local area, helping support community projects and island life. The lodge itself offers a comfortable and characterful base, with spacious lounges, a cosy snug, plenty of places to relax, and excellent home-cooked meals often sourced from local crofters and the estate itself.

All rooms on this trip are available for single occupancy.

Spring and early summer are a particularly special time to visit the islands. The famous machair grasslands burst into colour with wildflowers stretching towards white sand beaches and turquoise sea. Birdlife is everywhere, from wading birds and corncrakes to sea eagles overhead, while otters are often spotted along quiet shorelines.

Once you meet your Large Outdoors guides in Glasgow, we take care of all travel, ferries and logistics for the week so you can simply enjoy the experience.

Here’s what’s included in your trip:

  • Guided walks and sightseeing throughout

Your Accommodation – Grogarry Lodge

Our base for the week is Grogarry Lodge on South Uist, a historic sporting lodge surrounded by island scenery and open landscapes.

Unlike moving accommodation each night, staying in one place allows for a far more relaxed experience. You can properly settle in, unpack once, and enjoy returning each evening to the same welcoming base.

The lodge combines grand traditional spaces with a warm and relaxed atmosphere. There’s a large lounge for relaxing together after a day out, quieter snug areas for reading or chatting, and plenty of room to spread out and unwind.

The lodge is community-owned, with profits reinvested back into the local area. Meals are a real highlight here too, often featuring produce sourced locally from crofters and the surrounding estate.

This trip is now full board throughout your stay at the lodge, with breakfast, packed lunches and evening meals included on all non-travel days. Drinks are not included, but these can be purchased from the lodge, which also has an extensive wine cellar.

All rooms are available for single occupancy.
