A Week Exploring the Outer Hebrides
The Outer Hebrides feel wonderfully removed from the pace of everyday life. Long empty beaches, winding single-track roads, sea birds overhead, crofting communities, and huge open skies all combine to create one of the most peaceful parts of Scotland to explore on foot.
This guided walking holiday takes you across South Uist, North Uist, Benbecula, Barra, Lewis and Harris, with a carefully planned mix of coastal walking, wildlife watching, scenic drives, island culture and relaxed sociable evenings back at our lodge.
For 2027, we’ll be based for the full trip at Grogarry Lodge, a grand former sporting lodge owned by the local community. Profits from the lodge are returned directly back into the local area, helping support community projects and island life. The lodge itself offers a comfortable and characterful base, with spacious lounges, a cosy snug, plenty of places to relax, and excellent home-cooked meals often sourced from local crofters and the estate itself.
All rooms on this trip are available for single occupancy.
Spring and early summer are a particularly special time to visit the islands. The famous machair grasslands burst into colour with wildflowers stretching towards white sand beaches and turquoise sea. Birdlife is everywhere, from wading birds and corncrakes to sea eagles overhead, while otters are often spotted along quiet shorelines.

What People Say
“Fantastic walking holiday with great organisation throughout. Friendly, knowledgeable guides, excellent food and a really well-run experience from start to finish.”
Your Accommodation – Grogarry Lodge
Our base for the week is Grogarry Lodge on South Uist, a historic sporting lodge surrounded by island scenery and open landscapes.
Unlike moving accommodation each night, staying in one place allows for a far more relaxed experience. You can properly settle in, unpack once, and enjoy returning each evening to the same welcoming base.
The lodge combines grand traditional spaces with a warm and relaxed atmosphere. There’s a large lounge for relaxing together after a day out, quieter snug areas for reading or chatting, and plenty of room to spread out and unwind.
The lodge is community-owned, with profits reinvested back into the local area. Meals are a real highlight here too, often featuring produce sourced locally from crofters and the surrounding estate.
This trip is now full board throughout your stay at the lodge, with breakfast, packed lunches and evening meals included on all non-travel days. Drinks are not included, but these can be purchased from the lodge, which also has an extensive wine cellar.
All rooms are available for single occupancy.

Suggested Itinerary
Please note: Ferry times, weather and local conditions can affect plans in the Hebrides. The order of days and walks may change where needed.
-
Today is all about the journey into the islands.
We’ll collect participants from either Glasgow city centre or Glasgow Airport before travelling north through the Highlands to the ferry. Ferry schedules are normally released around March, so exact pick-up times are confirmed closer to departure, but departures are usually between 05:00–08:00.
It’s a long but rewarding travel day as we cross through changing Highland scenery before eventually reaching the Outer Hebrides and continuing to our lodge on South Uist.
We strongly recommend staying in the Glasgow area the night before departure.
-
A fantastic introduction to the islands with a walk exploring the Udal Peninsula.
Expect wide beaches, dunes, machair grasslands and huge coastal views. This area often feels wonderfully empty and remote, with excellent opportunities for birdwatching and spotting wildlife along the shore.
The colours here in spring and early summer can be remarkable, with wildflowers spread across the machair and turquoise water contrasting against white sands.
-
Today we explore more of South Uist with flexible coastal walking options depending on weather, tides and wildlife opportunities.
Routes may include quiet beaches, coastal tracks, lochside scenery and sections of machair rich in birdlife and flowers.
Otter sightings are always possible on these quieter coastal sections.
-
A full day exploring Barra, one of the most characterful islands in the Hebrides.
One of the highlights here is watching the famous beach runway in action as aircraft land and take off directly from the sands at low tide.
We’ll enjoy a scenic walk taking in beaches, rugged coastline and views across neighbouring islands, with time to explore Castlebay and soak up the atmosphere before returning north later in the day.
-
Often one of the highlights of the week.
We’ll head out on a wildlife cruise searching for seals, sea birds and other marine wildlife around the islands. Depending on conditions and luck, sightings may include dolphins, porpoises and sea eagles.
Later we’ll enjoy a crofting experience where you’ll learn more about traditional island life, local food production and the strong connection island communities still have with the land and sea.
-
Today we travel north to Lewis and Harris for a full day exploring some of the most famous locations in the Outer Hebrides.
Highlights may include:
Calanais Standing Stones
Luskentyre Beach
Traditional blackhouses
Historic crofting settlements
Dramatic coastal scenery and mountain backdrops
This is a longer day but gives a brilliant wider picture of life and landscapes across the Hebrides.
-
Our final full day keeps things flexible so we can make the most of weather and local conditions.
Possible options include:
Balranald Nature Reserve
Langass Woodland
Coastal walks from the lodge
Wildlife watching stops and scenic viewpoints
Relaxed beach walks and photography opportunities
We’ll round off the week with one final evening together at the lodge.
-
We leave early and retrace our journey back via ferry and the Highlands to Glasgow.
We usually aim to return between 18:00–20:00, although ferry crossings and traffic can occasionally affect timings, so please keep onward travel plans flexible.
