Exploring Dumfries & Galloway

Dumfries and Galloway is one of Scotland’s quieter regions, where coastal viewpoints, forest landscapes and peaceful lochs come together without the crowds found elsewhere.

You’ll be based in Whithorn, a small historic town often regarded as the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland, giving the trip a real sense of place beyond the walking itself.

During your time here, you’ll explore a mix of locations, from the Mull of Galloway lighthouse at Scotland’s most southerly point to wildlife-rich areas like the RSPB Mull of Galloway Reserve. On the way into the area from Carlisle, we spend time in Kirkcudbright, a harbour town known for its long-standing connection with artists and galleries.

It’s a part of the country that’s often overlooked, which means you can enjoy the coastline, scenery and small local places at a more relaxed pace.

Here’s what’s included in your trip:

  • Fully guided walks each day with an experienced Large Outdoors host

  • All planning and route organisation

  • Accommodation for the duration of your stay

  • Breakfast each morning

  • Packed lunches on walking days

  • One group evening meal

  • All transport required during the trip once you have arrived

  • A small, sociable group experience (max 8 participants)

What’s not included

  • Travel to and from the start point

  • Drinks and additional snacks

  • Two evening meals in local pubs (we eat out together as a group)

  • Personal kit and equipment (see kit list for details)

  • Travel insurance

  • A quieter side of Scotland, away from the usual busy spots

Excellent few days walking. The hostel was very clean and the food was fantastic. Our walk leader was knowledgeable and I felt very safe. We had a wonderful time.
