Exploring Dumfries & Galloway
Dumfries and Galloway is one of Scotland’s quieter regions, where coastal viewpoints, forest landscapes and peaceful lochs come together without the crowds found elsewhere.
You’ll be based in Whithorn, a small historic town often regarded as the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland, giving the trip a real sense of place beyond the walking itself.
During your time here, you’ll explore a mix of locations, from the Mull of Galloway lighthouse at Scotland’s most southerly point to wildlife-rich areas like the RSPB Mull of Galloway Reserve. On the way into the area from Carlisle, we spend time in Kirkcudbright, a harbour town known for its long-standing connection with artists and galleries.
It’s a part of the country that’s often overlooked, which means you can enjoy the coastline, scenery and small local places at a more relaxed pace.

Suggested Itinerary
Each day is planned to give you a mix of walking and exploring the area. Routes and timings may vary depending on weather and group pace.

We meet in Whithorn or offer a collection from Carlisle station. The journey to our base takes around 2.5 hours, with a stop along the way in Kirkcudbright — a harbour town known for its artists, galleries and waterfront.
If you’re travelling by car, you’re welcome to meet the group in Kirkcudbright before continuing on to Whithorn together.
After arriving and settling into the bunkhouse, we share our first evening meal together (included), with time to get to know the group and talk through the days ahead.
-
After breakfast, we head to the Mull of Galloway, Scotland’s most southerly point. This coastal walk takes in sweeping views over Luce Bay, with time to explore the lighthouse and the RSPB Mull of Galloway Reserve.
Later, we visit Portpatrick and nearby Dunskey Castle before returning for a relaxed evening and a group meal out in a local pub.
-
Today we explore inland landscapes around Loch Trool, with woodland paths, open views and a stop at Bruce’s Stone, linked to Robert the Bruce.
In the afternoon, we visit the Wood of Cree, known for its ancient trees and quieter atmosphere, before stopping in Newton Stewart for a break and something to eat.
In the evening, we head out together again to a local pub or restaurant.
-
On the final day, we explore the coastline around Kippford and Rockcliffe, often referred to as the “Scottish Riviera”. Expect coastal paths, beaches and open views — a good way to round off the trip.
We finish in the afternoon before returning walkers to Carlisle for their onward travel.
