Exploring the Area
Hadrian’s Wall stretches coast to coast and was built by the Romans nearly 2,000 years ago to mark the northern edge of their empire. Today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the UK’s most recognisable walking routes.
This trip focuses on the central sections, where the wall is most visible and the landscape starts to feel more dramatic. Expect a mix of open countryside, rolling hills, and sections where the wall still stands clearly along ridgelines.
You’ll also spend time in Carlisle, a historic border city with a strong Roman past and a good choice of pubs and places to eat. Evenings are relaxed, giving you time to explore or simply enjoy a meal with the group.

Suggested Itinerary
Each day is planned to give you a mix of walking and exploring the area. Routes and timings may vary depending on weather and group pace.
-
Arrive at your hotel from 15:00. Your host will meet the group in the bar at 18:00 before dinner. If arriving later, you can join when you get in. A station collection is available at 17:30, or the hotel is around a mile from the station by foot or a short taxi ride.
-
Starting from the hotel, the route heads out along the River Eden before joining the Hadrian’s Wall Path. This section is relatively steady underfoot and a good introduction to the route, finishing at Birdoswald Roman Fort. Along the way, you’ll see early remains of the wall and traces of Roman engineering in the landscape.
-
This is the central section and often considered the most memorable part of the route. The terrain becomes more undulating, with short climbs and descents along the ridge. You’ll pass some of the best-preserved sections of the wall, along with landmarks such as Sycamore Gap. Although the famous tree was felled, it has begun to regrow, becoming a symbol of the area’s resilience.
-
The final stretch is slightly easier underfoot as the route heads past Brocolitia Roman Fort and the Temple of Mithras. The walk finishes near Chollerford. From here, transport is arranged back to Carlisle. Those driving may choose to position cars at the finish. A return to Carlisle station is included in the afternoon—an open return ticket is recommended.
